The Snakehead Incident

An interview with Kenneth Nourse, 33, Attorney at Law

Ken grew up in Crofton Maryland, a pre-planned community which made national news last summer when a Snakehead was discovered in the neighborhood pond near where he lived. I recently interviewed Ken over brunch at the Marseille, a restaurant in Hell's Kitchen, on the corner of 45th St. and 9th Ave.

JS:Is it a romantic spot? Did you ever bring any dates to the pond?

KN: To the Crofton pond? No, never. Kids would hang out and from what I heard, would drink, take drugs. But I never did that, I was never in the cool crowd. I never thought drinking was cool.

JS: Did you want you were in the cool crowd?

KN: No, it seemed kind of stupid to me. And it was really confirmed when I was a Senior at Arundel HighSchool during the second lip sync competition that I entered.

JS: When you did the B52s song?

KN: No, the next year. I remember seeing [name withheld] really really drunk and running to the bathroom to throw up and I was glad that I missed that whole experience. It didn't seem really cool to me.

JS: What's near the pond where the Snakehead was found?

KN: Right next to the cesspool? Because the Snakehead was not found in the pond but in the nearby cesspool. I think many people were misinformed by reports. There's a gas station right next to the cesspool. And theres a mini-market in there and you can buy Ho-Hos and Coke and things like that.

JS: How do you think the Snakehead got in there?

KN: Well we know at this point. A guy bought them as pets and they got too big so then he released them in the cesspool.

JS: Who was this guy?

KN: He was a European American guy. Unlike what everyone suspected, he was not a Asian American immigrant.

JS: Are Snakeheads popular pets?

KN: No. And they are illegal in most places. You can still buy them in Boston. But I think Bush is banning them.

JS: They are upset in Chinatown. They sell them to eat. It's the first thing you are supposed to eat after surgery. It's supposed to help speed your recovery. Something to do with the vascular system.

KN: The fish is originally from China. Yeah. We all had to give up alot of things from the old country. Thats the way it goes.
